We’ve heard her sing at various events — a Tamil music reality show, awards ceremonies and even at AR Rahman’s London concert. And now, Aditi Rao Hydari has officially turned playback singer in Kollywood. The actress recently recorded a song, which has been composed by GV Prakash, for Vasanthabalan’s Jail.

“Actually, GV told me that he first sent me a message on Instagram, but I hadn’t checked it at all. So later, he contacted me through a common friend and said he would like me to sing for one of his films. I said, ‘sure’, but also gave him a disclaimer — I am not a singer, but if you feel I can do it, I am happy to do it. So, check it out for yourself. GV told me that this song would sound nice in my voice. He had heard me when I sang in Rahman sir’s concert. He also told me to send him a couple of audio clips, and I, like a good girl, sent him a voice note of me singing whatever he sent! So, he heard that and said we can record whenever I was ready and he could do it even the next day. But I had a packed schedule and asked him to wait. If it was any other person, they would have recorded the song with someone else, but GV was patient and waited for me all this while,” Aditi begins.

The song in question is a love song. So, was it in her comfort zone? “See, I am not a singer, but I love to sing. There’s a big difference between singing in tune and in being a singer. GV guided me very well, and even when I was in front of the mic, I kept listening to him. I’ve been brought up around music, but there’s so much to singing professionally. I always listen to my dialogues and never sit and practise them. Since I was shooting all the while, I kept listening to the tune on a loop. I hope I have managed to sing it well and people won’t kill me,” she says with a laugh.

The recording happened in Mumbai a few days ago. “We finished our session very late in the night. I actually told him I’d come to Chennai to record it, but I think he was quite nervous that I’d run away again,” she chuckles.

Meanwhile, Aditi has been juggling schedules of her films with Dhanush and Udhayanidhi Stalin. She adds, “I’m almost done with Dhanush’s film. We’ve had an amazingly efficient schedule and completed major portions already. For Mysskin’s film Pyscho (with Udhayanidhi), I’ve just done one schedule. But I’m looking forward to these two films.” ..
